How Do Retention Appliances Help?

Retainers are introduced after your orthodontist at The Dental Specialty Center has removed the braces which were installed on your teeth to straighten them originally. The retention stage of your orthodontics treatment begins after the braces have been removed. This is aimed at preventing the teeth from drifting back to their original position prior to the straightening.

The retention phase lasts for a minimum of 24 months. The final result of the orthodontic procedure will be based on the retainers, and this is why it is recommended that you follow through with the retainer in order to get the best results. It is recommended that you remember to remove the retainer before brushing, and also care for the retainer by brushing it before placing back in your mouth.

Hawley (Removable) Retainers

The Hawley retainers, also known as removable retainers are the most common types of retainers. They are made from a combination of metal wires and sturdy acrylic. This type of retainer is designed to help you keep your teeth in place and prevent it from regaining their original position prior to the orthodontic procedure. These retainers are made from teeth impressions and thus are specific to each patient. They are designed to fit snugly and comfortably on the roof of the mouth. The wire and acrylic materials also keep the teeth in perfect position. For aesthetic purposes, patients may choose to personalize the acrylic as it can be made into a wide range of color options.

Essix (Clear) Retainers

The Essix retainers, also known as clear retainer are both transparent and removable. They are designed to fit over the entire arch of the teeth. One of the major features of these retainers is that they take the shape and form of the Invisalign aligner trays. The Essix retainers are inexpensive and easier to wear. They can also be adopted as a treatment option for other dental issues including tooth movement and bridges.

Lingual (Bonded) retainers

The lingual retainers are applied directly to the inside surface of the lower canines. These retainers provide one of the most effective ways to prevent the lower teeth from shifting. The lingual retainers are permanently attached and patients who choose this retainer option must be careful with their bites as the bonding material is prone to breakage. Breakage can be caused due to incorrect biting and may result in shifting of the teeth.

Pendulum

The pendulum appliance is used to correct orthodontic conditions such as class II malocclusions with moderate overbites. This appliance is fixed and bonded to the upper premolar teeth and used to create space for the upper teeth. The pendulum is made of acrylic and various types of orthodontic wire.

Headgear

The headgear is an orthodontic appliance that helps in the correction of excessive overbites by placing pressure on the upper teeth and jaw. The pressure applied keeps the teeth in position or may be devised to move the teeth back into a better position for better bites. The headgear is generally used as an orthodontic appliance for the correction and control of jaw growth.

Herbst

Herbst is used by orthodontists to correct the problem wherein the upper teeth protrude beyond the lower teeth. In most cases, this condition may be caused by smaller lower jaw compared to the upper jaw as against the general belief that the discrepancy may have been caused by the protrusion of the upper jaw teeth beyond the lower. The Herbst appliance encourages the lower jaw to catch up in growth with the upper jaw thus correcting the condition.
